Dana Elaine Owens - better popularly referred to as Queen Latifah is an American performer, actress and acrobat. Queen Latifah is an American rapper, actress and singer. Queen Latifah is the daughter of Newark New Jersey native. Her parents were Lancelot Sr. who was a policeman, and Rita instructor of Irvington High School. The couple divorced in the year Latifah was ten. Latifah, who was born and brought up within Newark New Jersey attended Catholic school in Newark. Latifah is a word that means gentle and kind. The name was given by her cousin to her when she was aged eight. Being a tall girl, at 5'10, Latifah was a power forward on the basketball team at her high school. The song she performed was "Home" from The Wiz during a play at her highschool. Latifah began beatboxing with the ladies fresh rap group. Latifah joined the Flavor Unit in its original form, which consisted of a group of MCs with producer DJ Mark The 45 King. Mark James aka the DJ Mark the 40 King recorded a demo of the rap Princess of the Posse by Queen Latifah. He gave the recording to host Yo! MTV Raps which is hosted by Freddy. Dante Ross of Tommy Boy Music has signed Latifah upon hearing the track. Her first single, Wrath of My Madness, in 1988.
