Jazz performer Nancy Wilson a three-time Grammy Award winner was born February 20 1937 in Ohio, Chillicothe. She was the daughter of iron worker Olden Wilson and the former Lillian Ryan who worked as a housekeeper. Nancy was the youngest among six children. Nancy was greatly influenced as a girl by the music her dad was a fan of and played at home. Nancy knew that she was going to be a musician at the age of 4 years old. She developed her skills by performing in the choir at church. At the age of 16 when she started appearing often in Skyline Melodies. She was fifteen when she won the television talent show. The singer began performing in nightclubs at the similar age. Nancy at the age of 17, had graduated high school, and then matriculated at Ohio Central State College (now Central State University) for one year, before deciding to sing. Her first record was recorded in 1956 by the Rusty Bryant's Carolyn Club Big Band. They toured with her from 1956-1958. Nancy released her first album with Dot Records while in the group. Cannonball adderley advised her to go for a trip to New York in order to increase her fame. The city she went to was The Big Town, New York in the year 1959. After a few weeks the manager of Adderley was impressed by her voice and hired her. In 1960, he enlisted her to Capitol Records, and that same year she released her debut single. Guess who I saw today? Capitol issued five Nancy Wilson albums within two years. In the era of Adderley Wilson's direction, she began to focus on R&B but soon shifted to torch and jazz. Nancy Wilson, Cannonball Adderley as well as their 1962 partnership led her to the top of the charts. She had her breakthrough hit Tell Me the Truth by 1963. The performance led her to a spot at New York Coconut Grove in 1963. It was the most crowded in America's nightclub.
