Nancy Wilson and Maisie Richardson
Nancy Wilson, a jazz singer and a three-time Grammy Award winner was born in Ohio, Chillicothe 20 February 1937, to Olden Wilson, an ironworker who had worked for a long time as a housekeeper. Nancy was the eldest of six kids. Nancy was influenced by her father's musical tastes and the records that were played in her house. As a young girl, she already had a strong sense of who she was as well as what she hoped to accomplish. The choir at church encouraged her to develop her talent. After high school the singer began appearing often in Skyline Melodies. She was fifteen when she won the television talent show. Around the same time when she was working, she began performing in nightclubs. Nancy was 17 when she graduated from high-school and matriculated at Ohio Central State College (now Central State University) for an entire year prior to deciding to sing. In 1956, she recorded her first album in Rusty Bryant's Carolyn Club Big Band with whom she toured from 1956 until 1958. Nancy began recording for Dot Records in 1956, while with the group. Cannonball suggested that she make the move in New York and go to The Big Town to further her career. Within a short time, she was singing in The Blue Morocco Night Club which is located at Boston Road near The Bronx. Adderley's representative saw her singing and instantly agreed to sign her. The agent he was working with signed her up to Capitol in the year 1960. Her debut was that year. Guess Who? Capitol has released five Nancy Wilson albums within two years. The first was focused on R&B and then, with Adderley's influence, she began to embrace jazz. Nancy Wilson and Cannonball Adderley's collaboration in 1962 was instrumental to propel her into the spotlight and her hit Tell Me the Truth was released in 1963. Her first job was at the New York's Coconut Grove nightclub, America's premier club.
