Nancy Wilson (jazz singer) was born to Olden Wilson who was the Chillicothe ironworker on 20 February 1937. Her mother, Lillian Ryan worked as housekeeper. Nancy was the sixth of seven children. Nancy was a child who listened to the records of her father and his enthusiasm for music. At just 4 years old, she realized she'd be a singing star. The talent she developed was cultivated due to her participation in the church choir. She was a finalist on a talent show on TV in her 15th year and then began performing regularly on the tv program Skyline Melodies while still in high school. In the nightclubs she started singing at the age of fifteen. Nancy was just 17 at the time she completed high school. After enrolling at Ohio Central State College - today Central State University - for one semester, Nancy quit to become an experienced performer. The first time she recorded was with Rusty Bryants Carolyn Club Big Band, who she performed with from 1956 until 1958. In the band, Nancy made her first recording in the studio of Dot Records. Cannonball Adderley advised that she should move in New York to further her career and she went into The Big Town in the year 1959. In just a few months, she was offered an offer to sing in The Blue Morocco Night Club situated on Boston Road in The Bronx the place where her agent heard her and signed her. The agent he was working with signed her up to Capitol in 1960. She made her debut that year. Guess Who Saw Today. Capitol released five Nancy Wilson records in just two years. The first was focused on R&B, but under Adderley's influence, she began to embrace jazz. Nancy Wilson and Cannonball Adderley's collaboration in 1962 helped to make her a star and her smash hit Tell Me the Truth was released in 1963. This brought her a gig at New York's Coconut Grove the premier night club in America that year, and she became a star.
