Nancy Wilson and Maisie Richardson

Nancy Wilson was born 20th February 1937 in Chillicothe to Olden Wilson, an ironworker and Lillian Ryan (a former housemaid). Nancy is the eldest among six children. Her father's love of music and his collection of records at home had a major influence on Nancy when she was a little girl. At the age of four, she knew she would like to become an accomplished musician. She began to develop her talent by singing in church choirs. At the age of 15 when she was 15, she got a spot on an audition on television and was able to regularly appear on The Skyline Melodies Tv Show while still in High School. In the same year, she started to work at night clubs. Nancy was a high school graduate at the age of 17 and then attended the Ohio's Central State College, now Central State University for a entire year. After that, she left to pursue a career as professional musician. In 1956, she recorded her debut album in Rusty Bryant's Carolyn Club Big Band. The group toured with Rusty Bryant throughout 1956 until 1958. While in the group Nancy made her first recording on Dot Records. Cannonball told her she should move in New York and go to The Big Town to further her career. Her agent heard her speak at The Blue Morocco Night Club, Boston Road, The Bronx and she signed. Within one month of her arrival to New York, she was in the city. He obtained a contract for signing her with Capitol records in 1960 and she debuted the following year with the single. Guess who? Capitol issued five Nancy Wilson albums within two years. Initially focusing on rhythm and blues, under Adderley's influence she moved away from R&B and began to embrace jazz and torch songs. Nancy Wilson and Cannonball Adderley formed a band in 1962. This allowed her to climb the charts. By 1963 she had the biggest success with Tell Me the Truth. This brought her a gig in New York's Coconut Grove the premier night club in America that year, and she quickly became a legend.
